In addition to this function in cellular bioenergetics, mitochondria are involved in several other pathways such as the regulation of cell death processes, the modulation of ionic homeostasis, and the oxidation of carbohydrates and fatty acids. Therefore, it is not surprising that mitochondrial dysfunctions or alterations can have a serious impact both in defects of energy metabolism and in the multifactorial diseases in which they are directly involved.<\/p>\n<p>The involvement of mitochondria in the pathogenic mechanisms of neurodegenerative disorders (for example amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Alzheimer\u2019s and Parkinson\u2019s diseases, and Down\u2019s syndrome) has been well established.
